The Popes Named Leo: A Historical Overview

Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, thirteen popes have taken the name Leo, each leaving a distinct mark on the papacy. With the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, it is timely to look back at the legacy of his predecessors who bore the same name.

Pope Leo I (Leo the Great) – 440–461

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Italy
  • Known For: One of the most important early popes, he defended Rome from Attila the Hun and clarified the doctrine of the Incarnation. Declared a Doctor of the Church and canonized as a saint.

Pope Leo II – 682–683

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Sicily, Italy
  • Known For: Confirming the decrees of the Third Council of Constantinople and promoting sacred music.

Pope Leo III – 795–816

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Rome, Italy
  • Known For: Crowning Charlemagne as Emperor of the Romans on Christmas Day, 800, thus founding the Holy Roman Empire.

Pope Leo IV – 847–855

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Rome, Italy
  • Known For: Fortifying Rome against Saracen attacks and initiating the Leonine Wall construction.

Pope Leo V – 903

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Ardea, Italy
  • Known For: A short and troubled papacy, deposed and imprisoned by antipope Christopher.

Pope Leo VI – 928

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Rome, Italy
  • Known For: His brief and largely uneventful pontificate during the turbulent Saeculum Obscurum.

Pope Leo VII – 936–939

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Rome, Italy
  • Known For: Focusing on monastic reform and maintaining peace between conflicting factions in Rome.

Pope Leo VIII – 963–965

  • Original Name: Leo
  • Origin: Rome, Italy
  • Known For: His disputed legitimacy, as he was appointed pope while John XII was still alive.

Pope Leo IX – 1049–1054

  • Original Name: Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg
  • Origin: Alsace, France
  • Known For: Leading the papal reform movement, combating simony, and being a key figure in the East-West Schism.

Pope Leo X – 1513–1521

  • Original Name: Giovanni di Lorenzo de’ Medici
  • Origin: Florence, Italy
  • Known For: A patron of Renaissance culture, remembered for his conflict with Martin Luther and the onset of the Protestant Reformation.

Pope Leo XI – April 1605

  • Original Name: Alessandro Ottaviano de’ Medici
  • Origin: Florence, Italy
  • Known For: His papacy lasted only 27 days, earning him the nickname “Papa Lampo” (Lightning Pope).

Pope Leo XII – 1823–1829

  • Original Name: Annibale Francesco Clemente Melchiorre Girolamo Nicola della Genga
  • Origin: Italy
  • Known For: Restoring papal authority and conservative policies after the Napoleonic era.

Pope Leo XIII – 1878–1903

  • Original Name: Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci
  • Origin: Italy
  • Known For: Issuing the encyclical “Rerum Novarum” on social justice and workers’ rights, known as the oldest pope at the time of death.

Pope Leo XIV – 2025–Present

  • Original Name: Robert Francis Prevost
  • Origin: Chicago, USA
  • Known For: First American pope, moderate stance bridging progressive and conservative views, and a focus on global inclusivity.

A Legacy of Leadership

The name Leo has historically been associated with strong, reformative, and resilient leadership within the Catholic Church. From defending Rome against invaders to guiding the Church through pivotal reforms, each Pope Leo has left a significant mark on ecclesiastical history. As Pope Leo XIV embarks on his papacy, he continues a legacy steeped in tradition and challenge.
