As I’m publishing this, we are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. But this is not the first pandemic. Many times through history, diseases have ravaged civilization.

One of the bad ones was the Justinian Plague that affected the Byzantine Empire. This is an extract from Procopius’ ‘History of The Wars‘ in which he details the spread of the disease, and how it thoroughly and mercilessly “destroyed men”.
