This is not a review of the actual Gospel of Thomas but the edition that was edited by Marvin Meyer.
The Gospel of Thomas is an important writing for understanding the early church. Some even think that Thomas is earlier than our canonical Gospels but I doubt it.
Be watching for an episode of the podcast dealing directly with the Gospel of Thomas.
In many ways we are lucky to have this Gospel as this text was only discovered in 1945, and could have easily remained lost.
This edition provides a nice introduction of Thomas, giving all the basic information we need to know.
Then we get the text of the Gospel of Thomas. What is nice is that in addition to the English, we also get the Coptic of the full manuscript and the Greek of the fragments.
We then getting a short commentary at the back that helps readers to understand (somewhat) this confusing writing.
The final section is a sermon written by Harold Bloom based on a passage from Thomas. This was more an excuse for Bloom to write a post-Christian sermon than to explain the meaning of the text. It wasn’t my favourite part of the book.
