The Christian church was emerging out of a time of persecution but their troubles were not over. Shifting from threats from without to threats from within, the church begins to face a major Christological controversy.

Arius, a presbyter rather than a bishop, had an incredible impact on the church. While probably not inventing the Christology completely himself, he promoted the idea that Jesus was a created, although still a powerful and divine-like being who was not of the same substance as the Father.

This controversy was serious enough that a council of bishops was called to look at this question. The Council of Nicaea will be dealt with in a future episode.
